The William Tell legend, although of disputed historical authenticity, is of great significance in Swiss culture and the William Tell Chapel is located about 2 km off the road between Küssnacht and Immensee. The chapel marks the spot where, tradition has it, William Tell shot the Austrian governor Gessler with his crossbow; it is known locally as Hohle Gasse (Hollow Lane). The chapel was built in 1638 and restored in 1895 and contains paintings of ‘Gessler’s Death’ and ‘Tell’s Death’ by H. Bachmann.
