The fresco-clad old buildings in Lucerne’s historic squares are a delight and make a fascinating walk. Weinmarkt, where in 1332 Lucerne and other cantons swore a federal oath, is one of the most attractive squares; note the copy of a 1481 fountain. The nearby square, with the old town hall and the Pfistern guildhall, is another. The Hirschenplatz, named after an inn dating from the Middle Ages, also provides fine fresco examples. If you wish to take a complete guided walking tour, lasting about two hours, these are run on a daily basis in season, starting from the tourist office.
