Located part of the way along the Kapellbrücke (see separate entry), the octagonal Water tower (Wasserturm) is a Lucerne landmark and a much photographed city feature. Constructed in the 14th century, it is believed that it was initially built on dry land. Standing 34.5 metres high, with 4.5 metre thick walls and a perimeter of 38.0 metres, it was originally a defensive watchtower. Through the ages it has served many uses having been a treasury, prison, archive and torture chamber. The middle floor is now used as the headquarters of the Lucerne Artillery Association.
