Located upstream from the Spreuerbruecke (see separate entry), you will find the wooden water spikes (Nadelwehr from the word nadeln meaning needle). These are still being used today to regulate the water level of Lake Lucerne and to feed a modern hydroelectric power plant. The Water Spikes were constructed in 1859-1860, to replace the old Reuss steps, which had been used to channel the water over the medieval city mills of Lucerne. Technically unique, the spikes are lowered or withdrawn from the water manually.
