The 16th century Mézières Castle, some 19 km south of Payerne, houses a Museum (Musée du papier peint) which opened in October 2007 and exhibits an exceptionally rare collection of wallpapers. The castle was purchased in 1756 by Jean-Georges de Diesbach, a Swiss officer serving in the French army; it remained in the family until 1871. Throughout this period the building, including the new wing which was built in 1787-1789, was decorated with the latest French fashion wallpapers. The Foundation Edith Moret-Château de Mézières was created in 1994 to restore and preserve this unique collection, which has survived in situ.
