Via Francigena is a pilgrims’ walking trail which links Canterbury in the UK with Rome, via a route across the Alps. Martigny forms part of this route. The trail is of religious importance as pilgrims have prayed at the Basilica of the Abbey of St-Maurice, the oldest in Switzerland, and at the remains of the first cathedral of the Valais in Martigny. The trail also takes in the Great Saint Bernard hospice, which has been a haven for pilgrims and climbers for over a thousand years. The Tourist Office gives details of the path to follow. Marie-Jeanne Hugon offers guided tours: +41 (0)27 722 85 17.
