Vincenzo Vela (1820-1891) the Ticinese sculptor had a country house constructed for him to live and work in his native village of Ligornetto. A magnificent hall was created to showcase his works to Swiss and Italian art lovers. In 1892, his son Spartaco Vela, in fulfilment of his father’s instructions, bequeathed the house and grounds to the Swiss Confederation to establish a museum, which was inaugurated in 1898. Exhibits include plaster casts, models and drawings of works by Vincenzo Vela, as well as a few sculptures by his brother Lorenzo (1812-1897) and paintings, drawings and ceramics by Spartaco (1854-1895).
