One of Switzerland’s most important Renaissance buildings, the Town Hall, known locally as the Altes Rathaus, was built in the period 1602-1606 by Anton Isenmann on the site of a former warehouse. In Italian Renaissance style, its impressive overhanging roof is, however, typical of the Bern canton. The open arcades are still used today as a weekly market place and the Kornschütte hall above, formerly a trading area, is now used as an exhibition and concert hall. The 41-metre-high tower, with its beautiful painted clock face, was once used as a watch and observation tower
