Until the turn of the 18th century Lausanne was enclosed with walls and towers. The enlarging of the city made it necessary to demolish many of these defensive structures, but one tower remained: the Tour de l’Ale. This tower is believed to date from the 13th century. The oldest drawing that shows it is the Buttet map of 1638. The tower came close to demolition at the beginning of the 20th century, after having been used for many years as slaughter-house for pigs. Fortunately, those in favour of restoration of the tower carried the vote against it being knocked down.
