The Temenos, which is made up of Roman Baths and a temple, is the most ancient complex discovered from the Roman era in Martigny. Gallic coins and bones have been found on the site, showing that the complex was in use as a temple as early as the 1st Century BC. A century later the temple was integrated into a sacred enclosure (a temenos). The temenos had two main sections, the sanctuary and a resting and refreshment place. Travellers and pilgrims could eat and relax before going to honour the gods who ruled the sanctuary.
