Ursus spelaeus (the cave bear) used to live on Monte Generoso until approximately 20,000 years ago. A hibernation cave, discovered in 1988, contained the bones of at least 300 bears of varying ages, dated from around 35,000 to 45,000 years ago. During excavations in 2003, implements dating back to Neanderthal man were found. The cave and its finds are located 30 minutes from the Vetta restaurants. Before leaving for the cave, entrance tickets should be bought in Capolago. Guided visits are in operation from June to September.
