The spectacular Staubbach Falls are located a few minutes walk from Lauterbrunnen and are one of the most famous of the 72 waterfalls in the valley. Descending about 300 metres, the water becomes vapour long before it reaches the bottom and the name of Staubbach (‘dust stream’) reflects this phenomenon. A source of fascination since the Middle Ages, they have attracted writers, painters and poets; Goethe dedicated his poem ‘Gesang der Geister über den Wassern’(‘Song of the Spirits above the Waters’) to the falls, following a visit in 1779. They have also featured on a 1930’s postage stamp.
