Stans, the capital of the Nidwalden canton, is a town of some 7,800 inhabitants, located approximately 14 km southeast of Lucerne. The earliest traces of settlement date back to the 2nd century BC and Stans itself was first documented in 1124. Attractions (in addition to those separately listed) include the Salzmagazin, a former salt and corn store from around 1700, which now houses the History Museum, exhibiting a collection weapons, uniforms, religious art and paintings, and much more. Other features are the Winkelriedhaus, parts of which are from the 15th century, the St Klara Convent and a Capucin Monastery.
