The main square of the town of Stans, the Dorfplatz, was rebuilt after a fire in 1713 and has a number of attractions in addition to the Winkelried Monument (see separate entry). It is dominated by the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, which was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1641-1647 but still has a Romanesque bell tower; to the right of the church is a 1482 double chapel. Other features include the 1715 Town Hall and the sculpture ‘Death and the Maiden’ (Der Tod und das Mädchen), a work by Rudolf Brem.
