Stabio pre-dates Roman occupation. Evidence of Etruscan, Roman and Langobard settlements, in the form of gravestones, sepulchres, weapons, coins and a Longobard shield, has been unearthed. Stabio was the Roman capital of the Mendrisiotto. The sculptor Natale Albisetti was born in Stabio. Venerable buildings not to be missed include the 16th Century Church of St. James and St. Christopher, the 17th Century Church of St. Peter and St. Lucia, the 16th Century Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption in Castello and the 18th Century Chapel of the Madonna del Caravaggio.
