The lovely St Paul’s Church, which has many interesting features, was built in 1912 and was the first modern church built in the city since the 1677 Jesuit Church (see separate entry). It was designed in Art Nouveau style by the Swiss architect Karl Coelestin Moser (1860-1936). Moser was also the architect for the well known St Paul’s Church (Neo-Classic/ Art Nouveau) and St Anthony’s Church, both in Basel, the latter a pioneering example of concrete architecture. This Church replaced an older chapel on the road to Kriens to serve the needs of the Hirschmatt district community.
