In the 20th century, St John’s Convent (see separate entry) underwent restoration works. At this time, Roman frescos dating from 1160 were discovered in the church, together with others dating from Charlemagne’s reign c.800. These have been recognized by UNESCO as ‘Switzerland’s greatest series of figurative murals’ and the convent has been a World Heritage Site since 1983. The earlier paintings, in five rows stretching over the north, south and west walls have been executed in a limited range of colours. The later paintings are on the east wall and include a portrayal of the beheading of John the Baptist.
