The St John’s Benedictine Convent, established c.780 at the request of Charlemagne, was fortified to allow it to control the Val Müstair pass. In the first half of the 12th century it was converted from a monastery into a convent. It has been described by Unesco as ‘one of the most coherent examples of conventual architecture of the Carolingian period and the Early Middle Ages’ and designated a World Heritage Site since 1983. Most famous for its frescos, it also has a museum (see separate entries). The convent has been modified many times and around 1500 was converted from a single to triple nave church.
