The Spreuer Bridge is the second covered bridge across the River Reuss and was built in 1408; some 75 years after the more famous Chapel Bridge (see separate entry). Its name comes from wheat chaff (Spreu), this being the only place this waste could be dumped; the bridge is also referred to as Mill Bridge. It is famous for the series of 67 macabre paintings by Kaspar Meglinger, done between 1626 and 1635 and known as ‘Dance of Death’ (Totentanz), they mark the plague which swept through the city. There is a small chapel in the middle, dating from 1568.
