The Schynige Platte and its alpine garden with over 500 flower species is a popular attraction. It is reached from Wilderswil, approximately 3 km south of Interlaken, where a cog railroad, opened in 1893, takes visitors on the 7 km trip to the upper station at 1967 metres. The journey of about 50 minutes offers outstanding views including Lakes Thun and Brienz. From the top there is one of the finest panoramic vistas of the Bernese Oberland and the impressive peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. There is a hotel and restaurant and many hiking trails, including that to Faulhorn.
