Schauensee Castle, in the suburb of Kriens about 2.5 km southwest of the city, has an interesting history. The castle existed in the 13th century and there is reference to a Knight Rudolf von Schauensee (1257-1317) but by the beginning of the 14th century the castle was in ruins. In 1595 it was rebuilt by a Johannes von Mettenwyl and later acquired by the Meyer family who took the name of Meyer von Schauensee and gave the castle its present form, retaining the 13th century round tower. In 1963 it was acquired by the Kriens council after a protest march against overbuilding.
