The chapel of San Vigilio di Rovio is situated on the highest point of the hill of the same name, giving a superb view of the lake of Ceresio and the Valle Sovaglia in the distance. The Romanesque chapel is interesting for its architecture and internal decoration. The building dates back to the first half of 11th Century. The interior paintings are of Byzantine influence, typical of the first half of the 13th Century. Prior to restoration work the wall was marked with smoke stains, apparently left from an ancient devotional practice for the protection of pregnant women and their unborn children.
