The San Salvatore Museum (in the old Hospice) is devoted to the Scuola di Santa Marta, which arose in 1513 as a devotional order. The white habit was completed by a hood that hid the face with only two holes for the eyes. It was worn while accompanying people sentenced to death on their way to execution. This represented the final act of three long days during which time the Brothers of Saint Martha supported and comforted the person. After the execution, which would be by hanging, drowning or decapitation, the Brothers looked after the body, laying it out for religious services and burial.
