Saint-Michel Church in Baulmes is situated an eastern slope of the forest going down to the plain. Balmensis (meaning rock shelter) has long been inhabited. In the 4th century a priory was founded there. A wooden church is mentioned in 627. But it is from the 10th century that documents make it possible to trace of the history of Baulmes. Its Saint-Michel Church was attached to Payerne in 974. This donation was confirmed in 1125 and 1205 by the popes Honore II and Innocent II. But during the 15th century the building suffered from neglect after Payerne granted the priory to the inhabitants of the borough in 1432.
