The salt path runs between Ollon and Bex. The very first source of salt was discovered in Switzerland six centuries ago in what is now the antique salt mine of Dévens. Brine was evaporated opposite the Dents du Midi to extract the precious commodity. The salt road enables visitors to relive an incredible past, marked by famines, conquests and revolts. So important was salt that kings and smugglers, explorers and mercenaries, miners and men of knowledge vied to control the source. It was known as the white gold rush.
