The picturesque town of Romont, located on a hill around 17 km south of Payerne, was founded in the 10th century by the Dukes of Burgundy. There are substantial sections of the fortified perimeter wall remaining, including the landmark Tour à Boyer. Opposite the castle, which houses the Stained Glass Window Museum (see separate entry), is the beautiful Gothic Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption. Other attractions include the Restaurant de la Croix Blanche and the Hôtel du Cerf, both 16th century, the Cistercian Abbey of Fille-Dieu, built in the Glâne Valley in 1268, and a number of well-preserved 17th-19th century houses.
