The town of Nyon is built on one of Switzerland’s most important Roman sites, founded during the time of Julius Caesar, the urban centre of Colonia Iulia Equestris. The museum is housed underground within the foundations of a first century A.D. basilica. Ongoing archaeological excavations are adding to the treasures from the past. Amphorae, lamps, pottery, urns, coins and jewellery as well as decorated blocks of architecture, sculptures and original fragments of mural paintings, all of high quality, have been unearthed.
