Riva San Vitale is located on Lake Lugano at the base of Monte San Giorgio. It is believed that a Neolithic lake village once occupied the site, followed by a Roman settlement, as proved by the artefacts uncovered. The area was the first in the region to become Christian. Interesting buildings include the 18th Century Church of St. Vitale, which was constructed on foundations dating back to 1000 A.D or even earlier. Also worth visiting are the 16th Century Church of St. Croce, the 17th Century Chapel of St. Rocco and the Baptistery of St. John, believed to date from the 5th Century.
