Now the seat of cantonal government, the Ritterscher Palace has an imposing façade and was built in various stages in the city’s history. The building, which is in Italian Renaissance style, started life in 1557 as a residence for Lucerne’s mayor Lux Ritter and is named after him. In 1577 it became a home and college for Jesuits and then, in 1804, a government building. Melchior Berri (1801-1854), the well known Swiss architect from Basel, was responsible for the large council chamber, built in classicist style during 1841-1843. The inner three-storey courtyard is a further remarkable feature.
