The Museum is housed in a Tribschen house on Lake Lucerne, from 1866-1872 the residence of the revolutionary German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The museum also houses the Heinrich Schumacher collection of some 220 historic musical instruments, one of the most important collections in Europe. The present building dates from 1800, but its origins lie in the 15th century. The Richard Wagner exhibits are on the ground floor and contain photographs, paintings and original manuscripts of both letters and musical scores, including that for the Siegfried Idyll, which Wagner originally called the Tribschener Idyll. It also displays his Erard grand piano from Paris.
