The Reichenbach Falls, near Meiringen, were chosen by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) as the scene for the final battle between his characters Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty. The falls are accessible via the Reichenbachfall-Bahn funicular railway, a seven minute journey, which brings visitors to the platform where the legendary duel took place. The Reichenbach Falls are actually a series, with a total drop of 250 metres, and the Upper Reichenbach Fall, at 90 metres, is one of the highest in the alpines. There has been a railway to this beautiful spot since 1899 and the old carriages were copied in 1998/99 during redevelopment.
