Rancate is a charming village in the Mendrisio area, surrounded by terraced vineyards and meadows. The village is built around the parish church, with narrow streets and an attractive square. Dating back to the 5th Century, the village has many interesting old buildings. Amongst those worthy of visiting are the 18th Century Church of St. Stephen, the 17th Century Chapel of St. John the Baptist and Villa Züst dating from the 19th Century. The village is also home to the Züst Cantonal Art Gallery (see separate entry). Famous former residents include the architect, Carlo Fontana, and the sculptor, Grazioso Rusca.
