The old 19th century Lucerne railway station, which had a famous dome, was burnt down in 1971 and a new terminal built during the period 1984-1991. The main portal of the old station survived the fire and is now an impressive arch in the forecourt square. The new station, with its transparent entrance hall and elegant curved roof, is an architecturally unique building, the work of the distinguished international Zürich-based Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava (b 1951). Calatrava was also responsible for the Stadelhofen Station in Zürich, where he was required to incorporate the old station building into his design.
