The Priory of Notre-Dame in Bassins became a Cluny religious building in the 11th century. Pope Lucius III confirmed this possession in 1183. The priory was originally quite small and was part of an active farm. In 1536, the Protestant Reformation put an end to several centuries of catholic presence in Bassins. Only the Notre-Dame church, of which the oldest part is the chorus, survived. Foundations of the original building were found in the cemetery and probably date back to the 10th century. It is known that the small side chapel, dedicated to the Virgin, was founded in 1406 by a local lord, Girard de Penezat.
