Payerne lies 8km inland from the small town of Estavayer. The highlight of the town is the breathtaking Église Abbatiale (see separate entry). It is one of the most impressive examples of Romanesque architecture in the country. The church, which dates from the 11th Century and stands amidst the buildings of the abbey, has not been used as a religious building since 1562. It is often used for modern art exhibitions where the nave and aisles are used to show works of art as far removed from their surroundings as it is possible to be.
