Opened in 1870 the Payerne Abbey Museum was severely damaged by fire in 1987; it is devoted to Payerne history, but also used for temporary exhibitions. One permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Payerne-born artist, Aimee Rapin (1868-1956). Without arms from birth, she painted with her feet and lived in Geneva for most of her life; she was particularly noted as a portrait painter. Another permanent exhibition is devoted to General Antoine-Henri Jomini (1779-1869). Born in Payerne, he became a general in Napoleon’s army and later in the Russian army. He was a great tactician and a noted military writer and theorist.
