Payerne Abbey was founded in 965 by Queen Berthe of Burgundy for the Cluniac order and its church is one of the largest and most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Switzerland. It was dissolved during the Reformation in 1536 and some of the buildings were demolished at that time. Used at various times as a bell foundry, granary, prison and barracks, only the chapter house, which was rebuilt in the 16th century, now remains of the old abbey buildings. Of particular interest are the 11th century capitals, the Gothic vaults, the 12th century frescos and the Grailly chapel.
