Piazza Grande, a square surrounded by picturesque houses and arcades, sits at the heart of the old town of Locarno. Nearby, in Piazza St. Antonio, the Casa Rustica is home to the Locarno art museum, the Pinacoteca and Castello Visconteo, the civic and archaeological museum, is only a short distance away. Orselina is home to the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso. This spot, which offers an outstanding view of the town and Lago Maggiore, is said to be where the Virgin Mary appeared to the Franciscan monk, Bartolomeo d’Ivrea. The monastery’s museum is renowned for its collection of sacred art.
