The parish church of Martigny is a Roman gothic structure dating back to the 17th century. It was built on the foundations of the first cathedral of Valais. Excavations were undertaken between 1990 and 1993 and the basement revealed the remnants of a Christian cult. This was believed to have been housed inside a Roman complex, probably a suburban villa. By 400 AD the first cathedral in the Valais had been erected on the Roman remains. Various sanctuaries followed one another at this location until the baroque church, still visible today, was built. There is an audio-visual show detailing the site’s rich history.
