Schloss Neuhabsburg is located in Meggen and is a privately owned castle with a fascinating history. The present castle was built in 1871 in Gothic Revival style, on the foundations of the original castle, of which the only remains are parts of the square main tower, a few other buildings and a thick wall. The original castle was built in 1244/45 by the Habsburg family and may have replaced an old fort. In 1245 the castle was damaged after Frederick II was excommunicated by Pope Innocent IV at the Council of Lyon. Although the castle was an obstacle when the Swiss Confederacy was created in 1291, it was only demolished in 1352.
