The castle is located on a hill overlooking the town of Neuchâtel. Apart from being the seat of the canton administration, it is also one of the major tourist attractions in Neuchâtel. Rue du Chateau climbs steeply upwards and then stairs lead up to the southern castle walls. The coats of arms of 12 cantons of the Old Swiss Confederacy are displayed under the windows. This section of the castle dates back to the 16th Century when Neuchâtel was under occupation. The castle was built from the 12th to the 19th Century and the western section is a rare example of medieval architecture.
