The Napoleon Museum is located approximately 10 km northwest of Kreuzlingen in the Schloss Arenenberg. From 1817 this was the residence of Hortense de Beauharnais (1783-1837), stepdaughter of Napoleon Bonoparte and the mother of Napoleon III of France. The castle was built in the period between 1540 and 1546 and the estate is set in magnificent surroundings with views over Lake Constance; it was donated to the Thurgau Canton in 1906. One of the museum’s attractions is the ability to move around freely, sit down in the parlours and imagine the privileged life of the early 19th century. Special exhibitions are staged.
