Lausanne’s Cantonal Museum of Fine Art is the second oldest museum in Switzerland devoted exclusively to art. Opened in 1841, on Place de la Riponne, as both an art museum and a drawing school, it quickly outgrew its space and expanded in 1906 into the nearby neo-Florentine building at the foot of the City’s hill. Gabriel de Rumine built a cultural and knowledge centre taking in several museums (art, history and science), the university and its library. Long focused on Vaud and Romand art, the museum opened up to international art in the 1960s under the direction of René Berger.
