The Kunstmuseum in Olten opened in 1902 and, until 1964, was known as the ‘Disteli Museum’, being based on a collection of the works of the local painter and satirist Martin Disteli (1802-1844). His works, including caricatures, studies and drawings, are remarkable for their detail and still form an important part of the museum’s collection, which has now expanded to include a wide spread of modern art. Among the many artists whose work is on display are Hans Arp (1886-1966), René Auberjonois (1872-1953), Fritz Baumann (1886-1942), Martin Disler (1949-1996), Franz Eggenschwiler (1930-2000) and Oscar Wiggli (b.1927). The museum also stages temporary exhibitions.
