Morcote is a traditional fishing village close to Lugano, nestling on the shore of the lake. The lakeside houses have arches, which is very typical of fishing villages in the area. Many of these have been converted into shops and restaurants. The houses are constructed from stone and set in streets that are narrow and winding, giving a quaint feel to the area. Many of these streets have names in the local dialect and relate to the type of person who used to live there. For example, fish lane. Just above Morcote, at the top of 300 steps, is an attractive old church.
