Monte San Giorgio is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its record of marine life from the Triassic period. A collection of some of the most significant findings can be found in the Fossil Museum in Meride. Monte San Giorgio is 1,097 metres high and lies between the two southern arms of Lake Lugano, the Porto Ceresio and the Riva San Vitale. Blessed Manfred, a hermit from a noble family, was believed to have lived in holiness on the top of the mountain, during the 13th Century. The body of the saint is preserved in the church.
