Martigny was an important trading centre during the Roman period. The troops of Julius Caesar were defeated there in 57 B.C. On the southern outskirts of the Roman city, a mithraeum (sanctuary to Mithras) was built towards the end of 2 A.D. Discovered in 1993, it is preserved in the basement of an apartment complex and it is shown as an audio-visual demonstration during guided visits (contact the tourist office at the number given above). Numerous votive objects were discovered (over 2,000 coins, rock-crystal pieces and earthenware) which would have been offered to the god, Mithras.
