Mendrisio is noteworthy for both its history and its monuments, some dating back to the Neolithic and Roman eras. In addition to the many attractions detailed separately, the following are all worthy of a visit: the Chapel of Our Lady of Graces, which was originally a 12th Century hospital, the Church of St. Mary, which is Romanesque in origin, the Church of Saints Martin and Rocco, dating from the Carolingian period and enlarged in the 11th and 13th centuries, the 15th Century Chapel of St. Nicholas and its hermitage, the 18th Century Pollini Mansion and the Medieval tower over the Piazza del Ponte.
