Melano was first documented in 799 and was an important lake port during the Middle Ages. Its traditional industries were fishing and forestry, but these have made way for tourism. Interesting buildings include the Church of St. Andrew, erected in 1850 and designed by architect Luigi Fontana and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Castelletto, which is a 17th Century construction on 14th Century foundations. Other attractions include the waterfall of Sovaglia. There are a number of pleasant excursions available from the village, such as the climb to Castelletto.
