The town of Meggen, with a population of around 6,500, is located approximately 7 km southeast of Lucerne. First documented in 1226 as Mekken, it is on the Küssnacht arm of the Lake Lucerne. The Schloss Neu-Habsburg and Schloss Meggenhorn (see separate entries) are the town’s outstanding features. Other attractions include the parish church of Hinter-Meggen, which dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the unique Pius Church, designed by architect Franz Füeg and built between 1964 and 1966. The latter has no windows and is lit by daylight shining through the 28 mm translucent Penthelian Dionysos marble panels.
